The 11th Annual was a new record for turnouts.....more new old blood making the trek to the Creek, including Don Crotty, Marc LaFleur, Don Rubin, Craig Newman, Ralph "Rufus" Satterburg, HD Cutter. The early turnout on Thursday at Robbs has now turned into a major part of the annual reunion. Anne Marie O'Halloran and the Robbs Resort crew out did themselves hosting our private gathering on Thursday night with 20 plus showing up for food and drink. They are normally closed and opened just for the Lagnaf crowd, offering us three different dinner choices, plus exclusive use of the bar.....with this crowd, the bar keep was pretty busy......Probably the best part of Thursday Night was every time the Robb's door opened, some familiar face from the past came walking in.....it was great especially with all the new folks making the show for the first time.....Now all of us to a person were counting on seeing old S Kent Willis show up, but again this year, we were all disappointed...Maybe next year....Friday night we again visited Robbs for some more cheer and to catch up on the World Series.........it was a great evening........Included in the report is an accurate listing of who was going to showup and for the most part everyone on that confirmed list except for the Tiny Turd and S Kent Willis made the show, with Don Crotty coming all the way from Florida and Don Rubin making it up from Orange County. Marc LaFluer drove down early and was encamped with the huge crowd of early arrivals on the Flats. TK Kreuiter after missing the last couple of years made the show again this year. As for S Kent Willis, we had great expectations of his appearance this year....and according to Kent he made it up to the area, but had difficulty finding us and returned to Fortuna.
Here is the simple straight forward "Cowper Report" on the happenings this year at Lagnaf......
After an early trip to Robbs, the crowd returned to Airport Flats and the Creek Friday night for the chili cookoff. For a change there was a much wider selection to pick from with Craig Newman, Pete Cowper, Sam Brewer, as well as others contributing their personal preparations to help feed the large crowd. Saturday morning the Airport Flats Gang, including John Watt, Don Bertolette, Gene Rogers, the Ghannman, put on the first of two morning brunches. The food was great. For all the fisherman, it made it easy to stop on the way out for the "Early Bite" or on the return for a little late morning nourishment, all carefully prepared by a very experienced crowd of Old Tekes......Saturday Night, the Bunny Hutch, Rich Hasper and Sam Brewer, put on another outstanding feed of Tri-Tips, corn, salad, wine, etc.. This is no easy feat.....it takes a major shop every year by Sam and Rich and their usual huge mobile Bunny Hutch or Motorhome to haul all the food, tables and cooking equipment....the cabin donates the deck and multiple BBQs, while Sam and Rich spend the whole day Saturday preparing this feast for the entire crowd....food enough for an army ....certainly more food than our crowd could handle...and we do have some "Big Eaters" in this crowd......This year, like three years ago, the cabin area and Airport Flats Campground were visited by our local Raccoon Platoon who proceeded to make quick work of all the available ice chests, and never seemed to be intimidated by any of the manly Teke crowd.....Cowper and I brought a great supply of finger size candy bars, which they found and consumed, leaving a trail of Snickers wrappers all around the cabin. The Saturday night dinner was another big success. To follow this, the old slide projector was drug out of the closet and Carl Samuelson showed a bevy of slides which were great. On Sunday, Richie Howe and crew put on another great golf tournament on the flats in the campground. Because Richie Howe had a Sunday commitment, he had less time than normal to set up the Gerle Creek Open on Saturday, so Steve Richter, Milt Iskra and George Boring stepped in to relieve Richie of some of the setup duties. Richie again stepped up the quality of our golf course cut from the trees and rocks in the campground by bringing nine portable "Greens" which helped improve the competition. Once the tournament was over, the crowd loaded and stowed all the formal greens under my cabin for next years tournament. Since I do not want to spoil the suspense, we had a new trio of winners to add to the brass plaque on perpetual Gerle Creek Open Trophy. Rather than break out the names here, you will need to review the pictures below and accept the challenge to try to identify the winners........After the tournament on Sunday, many of the remaining attendees packed up and hit the road for the home front while a few hardy souls(13 remaining) decided that for Sunday night, we would again visit Robbs Resort for dinner (Thanks to Quiggle for generously buying spaghetti dinner for all) and a few wets and then after much discussion, the majority mounted up and headed 9 miles West to Uncle Tom's Cabin for a single round before calling it a night. That pretty much covers the the annual gathering....Oh, for the disbelievers, check out the Bob Ickis "Coming to Dinner" photo link below for the very nice and healthy Brown Trout that Bobby tricked into biting his hook......there are fish.....it just takes some sort of secret voodoo to get them on your hook or fly.....all of us who tried had a great time....If you don't believe me, check out the "Ultimate Fly Fisherman" link....have you ever seen a happier guy all suited up in his "Best Going Fishing" duds......mgb
